Forschungsaktivitäten

Unser Interesse gilt der Entwicklung und Fehlentwicklung des Lymphgefäßsystems, der Induktion von Lymphgefäßen in Tumoren und deren Bedeutung für das lymphogene Metastasieren. Durch die molekulare Charakterisierung humaner Lymphendothelzellen möchten wir neue Funktionen der Lymphgefäße identifizieren. Wir untersuchen die Regeneration von Lymphgefäßen aus Stammzellen und versuchen dabei den Lymphgefäßbaum als Ganzes im Blick zu behalten, also initiale Lymphgefäße, Präkollektoren und Kollektoren, um die strukturelle und molekulare Heterogenität des Systems zu erfassen.

Fragen der Embryonalentwicklung des Lymphgefäßsystems untersuchen wir bei Wirbeltieren (Vogel, Maus). Im Mesenchym von Vogel- und Mausembryonen haben wir Zellen gefunden, die Charakteristika von Lymphendothelzellen (LEZ) und zum auch molekulare Charakteristika von Makrophagen besitzen. Nach Xenotransplantation (Huhn-Wachtel System) sind diese Zellen in der Lage, Lymphgefäße zu bilden. Zellen mit vergleichbaren Merkmalen finden sich auch im menschlichen Blut. Einen Zusammenhang mit dem Kaposi Sarkom halten wir für denkbar.
